Locations


Australia has a significant coastline to defend, so the Navy operates from bases located right around the country. Depending on your job, you'll work at sea with periods spent ashore.

National coverage and capability

The locations of Navy bases provide broad coverage of Australia whilst satisfying specific strategic needs such as border protection. Each establishment provides a home port for Navy ships, and some host administrative offices, training facilities and/or helicopter squadrons too.


Australian Capital Territory

HMAS Harman

Canberra, ACT

Provides administrative support to Navy personnel located in the Canberra area, and is home to a communications function, the Defence Information Systems and Communications Establishment and a Naval Cadet unit.

New South Wales

Fleet Base East

Port Jackson, Sydney NSW

Home port for numerous Navy vessels, including Anzac and Adelaide Class Frigates, a landing ship, an offshore support vessel, and the new Canberra Class Amphibious Ships.


HMAS Kuttabul

Potts Point, Sydney NSW

Provides administrative, training and logistics support to Fleet Base East and personnel within the Sydney area.


HMAS Waterhen

Waverton, Sydney NSW

The Navy's lead establishment for mine warfare, and home to Australia's Mine Countermeasures Force, Clearance Diving Team One and a fleet of Minehunter vessels.


HMAS Albatross

Nowra, NSW

The Navy's largest operational establishment and home of the Fleet Air Arm, supporting Seahawk and MRH-90 helicopter squadrons, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles and the ADF Helicopter Training School.


HMAS Penguin

Balmoral, Sydney NSW

Home to the RAN Diving School, RAN Hydrographic School and the RAN Medical School, along with specialist units and medical facilities.


HMAS Watson

Watsons Bay, Sydney NSW

The Navy's premier maritime warfare training establishment for all ranks from Junior Sailors to Commanding Officers.


HMAS Creswell

Jervis Bay, Territory

Home of the Royal Australian Naval College and the school of sea survivability and ship safety.

Northern Territory

HMAS Coonawarra

Darwin, NT

A vitally important Navy port given its proximity to our northern neighbours, and home to a large fleet of patrol boats.

South Australia

NHQ South Australia

Adelaide, SA

Provides administrative support to Navy personnel working in South Australia and represents the Navy in the local community.

Tasmania

NHQ Tasmania

Hobart, TAS

Provides administrative support to Navy personnel located in the Hobart area.

Victoria

HMAS Cerberus

Crib Point, VIC

Located 70 km from Melbourne, the Navy's premier training establishment where around 6,000 personnel are trained annually. Schools here include Recruit School, School of Sea Survivability, Physical Training Instructor School, Defence Force School of Signals and the Engineering Faculty.

Western Australia

HMAS Stirling

Rockingham, WA

Located 38 km from Perth, provides administrative, training, communications and logistics support to the personnel and vessels based here. These vessels include Collins Class submarines, support vessels and ANZAC Class frigates.

Queensland

HMAS Cairns

Portsmith, Cairns QLD

Provides logistic and administrative support to numerous specialist units, and is home to patrol boats, Hydrographic Survey vessels and Motor Survey Launches as well as Laser Airborne Depth Sounder aircraft.


HMAS Moreton

Brisbane, QLD

Provides coordination and administrative support for all Navy activity in Queensland south of Rockhampton; and is home to Navy Reserve musicians, a Dive Team and Navy cadets.
